Borough ready as new season looms

Newport County Borough Football Club is set to play their first ever league match on Saturday when the season kicks off.

The Borough will host Shrewsbury–based side Haughmond in the Shropshire County Premier League with kick off at 3pm.

With a number of frendlies under their belt, the team are ready for battle after two wins, a draw and one loss.

Manager Dave Medlyn, said he was hopeful the side could challenge for honours this term despite all the pieces of the jigsaw not quite complete.

He said: “Being a new team there are a lot of things still to organise but on Saturday we will be in first gear ready to go.

“We are asking the people in Newport to come out and support us, we have already had a few people at the friendlies and it would be great to have some backing.

We have a really good team this year with a squad of about 23 and since moving to the Newport Nova ground we have taken in some of the junior players.

“We have some great players and we want to build the team up with a view of getting into the West Midlands league.”

And the Borough, as they have been christened, will be hopeful of getting off to a winning start on Saturday afternoon.

The club has caught the imagination of people in the town after involving Burton Borough School in a competition to design their team crest.

The design was announced last month and winner Elizabeth Kenyon now has her image printed on the team shirts and accessories.

Some of the other designs submitted by students from the school have also been put on their team website for people to view.
Medlyn added: “We have received fantastic support from people in the community.”

The team have also received the draw for the County Cup which begins in October and will face Whitchurch Alport.

There are 14 teams in the league alongside the Borough, who took over the league position left by Tibberton last season.

Programmes will be available at Saturdays game, from the club cafe, at Shuker's field for 50p.
