The GCSE celebrations reverberated around Newport this week, as headteachers and pupils were left delighted with their record breaking results.

Burton Borough announced a massive nine per cent increase in students achieving five or more A-C grades.

Adams’ Grammar posted a record breaking percentage of A and A* grades and Newport Girls High a 100 per cent overall pass rate with grades A* to C.

Burton Borough, headteacher, David Hill said: “As you can imagine, I am thrilled by this set of results.

“Students right across the ability range have worked very hard indeed, and now they have achieved the results they deserve.

“They have received amazing support from their parents, and all the staff in the school who have gone the ‘extra mile.’

Newport Girls High recorded the best results in the school’s history.

Girls High, Headteacher, Edwina Gleeson, said: “Needless to say we are very proud of the results.

“This is particularly important as this is the first year our double entry has got GCSE results.

“Many congratulations to the girls and their tremendous achievement and to the staff for their hard work and dedication.

“A special word of thanks also to the parents for their support.”

One of the top achievers at Adams’ Grammar, Corey Martin, who achieved nine A*s and three As, said: “I’m over the moon with my grades, they are the best I could have ever hoped for.”

Adams’ Grammar Head Michael Barrett, added: “Over recent years there has been a significant and consistent degree of improvement of the school’s GCSE results. We are delighted with the overall performance of the school.”
