Call to ensure business can grow in town

There is no office space in Newport for businesses to expand which could result in employment leaving the town - a business partner warned this week.

Partner at Smith Bellerby Limited, Steve Bellerby, made the plea this week for other businesses to speak up in an attempt to keep employment in the town.

The company, which manages energy and telecommunication fields for companies such as Easy Jet, is desperate for more space.

Mr Bellerby fears the lack of adequate office space will hamper any chance of his business growing.

He said: “We are a growing business and we work from home at the moment but we are looking to expand and we have this situation where we literally cannot fit anyone else in.

“We are faced with moving office premises and out of Newport because there is no space.

“I have talked with the planners at Telford & Wrekin Council and I was told if we want office space - it’s in Telford. They did a property survey for us and came up with one first floor office in St Mary Street, but we need open plan.

“I want to keep employment in Newport. We want to employ someone shortly, but to do that we will almost certainly have to move out of the town.”

Mr Bellerby called on Advantage West Midlands and the council to try and get more space in Newport.

He added if businesses got together there would be a better chance of getting extra office space.

“I would be interested in talking to other business owners and if they come forward then we could present a case to someone like Advantage West Midlands,” he added.

Telford & Wrekin Council cabinet member for regeneration Councillor Eric Carter said a solution was in the pipeline.

He said: “There are some plans going forward before the next plans board on a site at Audley Avenue, where the car auction is.

“That will be for a mix of offices come industrial units for people to use and there could well be opportunities there. We want this kind of development in the town to offer more employment.”
