The High Street bus build–out could finally be ripped out after Telford & Wrekin Council launched a review into the town traffic scheme.
The scrutiny panel will look at the High Street with the controversial bus build out at the top of the agenda.
Council leader Andrew Eade has led the calls for the work to be reviewed with the scrutiny panel expected to agree the decision at a meeting on September 4.
He said: “I and many people in Newport have reservations about this scheme and its effectiveness which is why I am calling on the scrutiny commission to review it as a matter of urgency.”
The rest of the traffic calming measures are expected to remain in place.
Councillor Eric Carter said starting from scratch would
prove too costly.
He said: “The review will be of the scheme as a whole but we are not talking about taking everything out and starting again because that will be very expensive.
“But we will be looking very closely at what we can do with the bus build-out. We could move it across to Stafford Street car park which I think would be fine because we don’t need it on the High Street.
“But obviously if people say they still want a bus stop on the High Street the build- out will come with it.
“Because it is a 20mph zone, to meet legislation, certain traffic calming measures have to remain in place, so we might end up with a central reservation, for example, which would help people cross the road.”
The scrutiny commission will consult with residents, businesses and the town council before deciding on any changes.
