Shock as cricket club are spot on

THE strongest team in the Arthur Hawkins Newport District Dominoes League were bowled out by the A team from Forton Cricket Club.

Hosts the Three Horseshoes started off by winning two of the first three games but then the next three were very close with the lead changing regularly.

The cricketers were able to close off all three games to their advantage and take a 4-2 lead.

In the final game J Strachan had a very good hand at the crucial stage of the game and S Burrell was unable to stop the cricketers leaving with a 5-2 win.

Third placed Swan B visited the Newport Bowling Club to play the B team. The bowlers set off at a cracking pace and won the first four games. The Swan fought back in the last three games and wins for T Davy, C Rumbles and M Day limited the Bowlers to a 4-3 victory.

The Shoes B travelled to Forton Cricket Club to play the B team. The first four games were equally divided at 2-2, but then N Wright beat Shoes captain M Lea to give the cricketers the lead, only for P Gibson to level the scores against B Herriman.

The final game was very tense with T Jackson overcoming G Edwards to give the cricketers a 4-3 victory.

Dominant

Two evenly balanced teams played when the Childs Ercall Club travelled down the road to Tibberton’s Sutherland Arms, although this season the Suthie have been struggling.

They left the blocks at a furious rate and soon established a 5-0 lead. However they did not add to this total as P Clifton and D Constable pulled two games back for the Ercall Club.

The Suthie therefore added seven points to their total but this did not give them a rise in the table.

The Wheatsheaf were visited by the Honeysuckle who were soon in dominant form and won the first three games. C Rigby pulled one back for the Wasps but all to no avail as Mel Edwards, E Swanborough and M Jones won the final three games for the Honeysuckle to leave with a 6-1 victory margin.

In the final match the Swan A continued their relentless march for the title when they entertained the A team from Newport Bowling Club.

After four games the scores were level at 2-2 but wins for M Trumper and A Jones secured the win for the Swan. D Matthews denied them another win when he beat R Johnson to make the final score 4-3 in favour for the Swan.
