A PARTY could be held on Newport High Street to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
Newport Town Council has called on residents to come forward with suggestions of ways to celebrate the long weekend in June.
Chairman of the leisure and environmental services committee, Councillor Peter Scott said: “We want people to come forward with ideas. If enough people want it, maybe we could even consider a High Street party.”
Councillor Scott said the council could not commit to organising all aspects of the day, but would encourage community groups to get involved.
He added: “What the council is going to be doing is the civic side of things. We are hoping groups will organise events on the side and we can pull it together.
“We want the schools and traders to be involved. Maybe businesses could serve food on the streets.
“It’s a one-off, unique day and it’s a chance for people to let their hair down and forget all the bad things that are happening.
“The town council and I would be happy to get the ball rolling on any ideas people have.”
The council has arranged for a beacon to be lit on top of St Nicholas Church. Anyone with any celebration suggestions is encouraged to contact the Guildhall.
