A hero taxi driver pulled his car over to save a terrified woman from a loose Bullmastiff dog.
Amin Ahmed was on his way to a pick up a customer last Thursday morning when he heard panicked cries from a woman walking with her two dogs and a child.
Instinctively the Ultimate Taxis driver stopped his vehicle on Meadow Road in Newport and got out to help.
Mr Ahmed said the Bullmastiff was off its lead and attacking the woman’s dog.
It was also getting too close to the child in the pushchair, who was about eight months old.
He tried shouting at the dog, but in the end he had to chase it away with a stick.
Mr Ahmed, aged 44, said: “I heard the woman shouting ‘help my child, help me’.
“The dogs were fighting each other. She was terrified because the dog was sniffing the child.
“I didn’t know what to do. I had to get a stick from the side of the road and run the dog away.”
Mr Ahmed said he waited to make sure the dog had gone before handing the stick to the woman and carrying on to pick up his customer.
Meadow View resident Veronica Riley said the large light brown Bullmastiff had been around the area without its owner for a couple of weeks.
She said: “I don’t think a day has passed when I haven’t seen the dog wandering around.
“Recently it attacked my friend’s dog. But next time it could be a child.
“The owners are obviously not keeping an eye on it. They are not responsible pet owners as far as I’m concerned.
“I have told my eight-year-old daughter to come in if she sees it.
“I thought what the taxi driver did was very brave.
“He could’ve easily driven on and done nothing.”
Ultimate Taxi boss Councillor Terry Spooner praised his employee’s actions.
He said: “It just shows the quality of staff we have here. They are willing to go far beyond the call of duty.”
A Telford & Wrekin Council spokesman said the dog warden was called and checked the area but could not find the Bullmastiff.
