Bid for 300 new homes revealed

Developers want to build 300 new homes on farmland next to Moorfield School, it was revealed this week.

Persimmon Homes and Henry Davidson Developments are preparing a planning application for Grove Farm, in between Wellington Road and Moorfield Lane in Newport.

The development would include affordable housing and new playing fields.

A public exhibition has been arranged for Friday June 17, 6pm-9pm, and Saturday June 18, 10am-1pm, at Moorfield Primary School.

Developers hope to submit an outline planning application next month.

Birmingham-based GVA is promoting the project on behalf of Persimmon Homes and Henry Davidson Developments.

Principal Planner Chris Couper said: “The proposals will include a mix of house types, sizes and tenures to help create an inclusive environment and will deliver affordable housing to meet local needs.”

Mr Couper said discussions were ongoing with the nearby schools about how the new open space could be used.

He added: “We are currently developing our ideas on how this space can best meet the needs of the community as well as the Primary and High Schools.”

The area would also include new paths and an equipped children’s play area.

But initial opinion of residents living around the site was mixed.

Dani Stafford, aged 24 of Silverdale Close, said: “Six of us live here and none of us want it.”

And 52-year-old Julie Renyard of Waterford Drive, said: “It will just end up being students on Boughey Road and the houses up here will be bought to let and the locals won’t be able to afford them.”

An Alton Grove resident, who did not want to be named, said she had lived in the area for 20 years and had always expected the farm to be developed.

She added: “I just hope it’s sympathetically done, that the boundary fencing is environmentally attractive and that the access points to the new estate are carefully planned.”

Dorothy Wardle, 58, of the Larches, was less concerned.

She said: “To be honest I’m not really bothered as long as there is an entrance onto Wellington Road because it’s crowded around here already.

“Boughey Road just wouldn’t cope.”

Grove Farm has been in the Mansell and Moyden family for generations.

In 2005 a council report identified it as a suitable site to meet housing requirements in Newport.
