Newport Town Council could be facing a crisis in May unless more residents are willing to stand for election.
Just six of the 11 current town councillors said this week that they definitely intend running again in the May elections.
That means there could be six seats on the council up for grabs – including the one current vacancy – but so far interest has been limited.
Just one person turned up to a recent surgery organised to give information to interested parties.
Some councillors admitted they were concerned about filling each seat.
“I am concerned that we will get enough to replace those not standing again,” said Councillor Peter Scott.
“We don’t want to be co-opting people if we can help it.”
And Councillor Roy Scammell, who also hopes to serve a final third year as mayor, said: “There is a bit of concern at the moment.
“I just don’t think people have the time or inclination to get involved.”
Councillors Adrian Meredith, Eric Carter, Phil Norton, Roy Scammell, Tim Nelson and Peter Scott said that they intend to stand again.
Councillors Daniel Ashley, Bob Unwin and Tony Forrester said they were unlikely to put their names forward.
Councillor Glyn Gratton said he was considering his options before the April 4 cut-off.
Councillor Adam Stanton could not be contacted.
All retiring councillors persuaded others to step into the breach.
Town Councillor of four years Ashley, aged 33, is stepping aside as he is moving elsewhere in the county.
He said: “It’s time for some fresh faces. I think there needs to be some recycling.
“People get too comfortable and then they are not as assertive as they once were.”
Lib Dem Councillor Unwin, who was co-opted in 2005, said: “I have enjoyed the experience and I’ve been through the ups and downs, but at the moment it’s not my intention to stand for re-election.
“Now others need to step up. It’s all very well standing back and pontificating, but the town needs people to do things.”
The Labour party has already announced that it intends to field a candidate in every seat.
