Tennis facility to be proud of

sd3559940sw30bougheygarden.jpgNewport can boast some of the best tennis facilities in the county – after the ribbon was cut on the new-look Boughey Gardens Tennis Club.

Members and supporters of the club gathered for the official re-opening of the refurbished courts.

Around £60,000 has been spent on resurfacing, re-fencing and painting.

Club chairman Carlton Adams thanked all who had contributed to the project.

He said: “Our thanks go to the Boughey Trust, Newport Town Council, Newport Rotary, Newport Round Table, Newport Lions, The cooperative society and Lilleshall Pantomime club.

“And also the Tennis Club Committee and junior and senior members for all the numerous fundraising events. Newport now has a public tennis facility to be proud of.”

Keith Smith MBE and Mike Evans performed the ceremonial snip.

Mr Smith retired as Head Coach in November after 40 years of coaching in the town, while Mr Evans is the retired treasurer with 33 years on the committee.

Dozens of children and adults had turned out for the grand opening competitions over the weekend.

Mr Clarke and son Michael won the child tournament, while Andy Howard and Vicky Hunt scooped adult trophy the following day.

Fundraising to maintain the facility now begins in earnest, and the club is looking for local businesses to get on board.

Anyone interested should contact Jackie Evans on (01952) 244256.
