Sadness as revamped park hit by litterbugs

sd3547681sw16vicpark.jpgCigarette packets and beer cans have already appeared in the revamped Victoria Park water feature.

Empty crisp packets and milk cartons were also found in the new-look Newport park just weeks after the water feature, beyond the new car park, was completed.

Newport resident Ken Evans was saddened to see the rubbish blighting what is otherwise an attractive area.

He said: “I can’t believe it. After all that money that was spent on the regeneration of Victoria Park and Newport, people are using it as a skip.

“Perhaps they’ll now regenerate the Springfield Road tip and provide a seating area there.”

Telford & Wrekin Council said it is committed to litter-picking the area on a weekly basis.

Council Adrian Lawrence, cabinet member for environment, said: “Victoria Park is litter-picked weekly and is in a good, tidy condition for the majority of the time.

“Most Newport residents are very proud of their town and are conscientious about disposing of their litter, but unfortunately there is always an element who are not so community minded.

“New bins are due to be installed in the park in the next few days which will help alleviate the situation.

“We will work with the police and community support officers to deal with any anti-social behaviour relating to littering.”

Work on the park began in April and was expected to last for five or six weeks.

And although it is now open to the public, a number of minor problems have yet to be resolved.

Speaking at a meeting of Newport Town Council held on Wednesday night, Councillor Adam Stanton said: “We need top soil and grass seed for the green and we are still awaiting the picnic benches to go in between the parking area and the canal.

“The contractors are due to leave in the next couple of weeks. If they haven’t finished by then another contractor will be brought in to finish the job.”

Councillor Timothy Nelson, said: “We have had an extremely dry May and June and it hasn’t been the best conditions for the work to be done.

“I would ask the public to patient and picture it in two or three years time when it has settled and things have started to grow.”
