In Bloom judges visit town

sd3539578la5bloom-8.jpgIn Bloom organisers are keeping their green fingers crossed after judges took their annual tour of the town.

Judges were in Newport on Monday to run the rule over the aesthetics of the area.

And, while keen to not raise expectations, organisers said the day had gone well and they were hopeful of scooping an unprecedented seventh consecutive gold award.

Newport In Bloom representative Eva Allen said: “They were new judges and they were very interested in what we had to show them.

“We can’t speculate about the result because we just don’t know.

“We know how well we’ve worked and tried. Win or lose, we’ll celebrate.”

The tour started at the Baptist Church on Water Lane, where Newport’s Carnival King and Queen presented the judges with red and white flowers.

Newport Junior School then sang songs before the tour began, taking in Station Road, Boughey Memorial, Boughey allotments, High Street and St Nicholas’ Church.

Fellow organiser Gill Watkins said judges were particularly impressed with the Mediterranean bed at the top of Stafford Road.

She said: “The involvement of so many contributors impressed the judges.

“A big thank you to Henshall’s Insurance who paid for all the planting,Telford and Wrekin for their amazing amount of work and all of our In Bloom volunteers, especially Derrick, who designed and helped to plant the bed.

“Judge Mark Wiltshire commented on the tall waving grasses and Ken Whittacker loved all of the herbs.

“It is a lovely bed to sit and look at while passing the time of day.”
