First glimpse of new Butter Cross area

sd3535993sw02highstreet.jpgThis is the first glimpse of new-look Newport. This computer-generated image of how the Butter Cross area of the town centre will look after the work has been supplied to us by Telford & Wrekin Council.

It shows the new paving and the expansive pedestrian area outside Raja’s Fast Food and Newport Tackle.

Once work has been completed, there will be five parking spaces, plus one disabled space, on the road side of the Butter Cross monument. English Heritage will also be involved in restoring the stone monument itself.

The Council are in the process of completing similar ‘fly through’ images of the other areas of the High Street.

These will be published in the Advertiser and displayed in the Guildhall in due course.

The £750,000 High Street regeneration works started on Monday as planned. Work is scheduled to last for 19 more weeks.

Borough Councillor Eric Carter said work was progressing well.

He said: “Work started on Monday with one of the first processes being to generate a stock of the older kerbs.

“The repaving works have started outside the Sorting Office and they will proceed towards the Salters Lane junction before moving to the other side of the High Street to work in front of Adams’ Grammar School during the summer holidays.”
