Charity walk of a lifetime

sd3520407jm18offas.jpgTwo Newport lads have set out on a walk of a lifetime to raise funds for Cancer Research UK.

Michael Crumpton, 21, and Matthew Dabbs, 22, are currently backpacking along the 177 miles of the famous Offa’s Dyke walkway.

Torrential rain, blisters and aching muscles have so far not stood in the way of the two lads who, at the time of writing, are just over half way.

The pair decided to take on the challenge after a friend was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Michael’s dad, Paul Crumpton, said the two young men are in good spirits.

He said: “Both of them are doing very well. I think they both found the first few days quite tough but now they are getting into the swing of things and are starting to enjoy it.

“Before they left they did some training but the walk does take it’s toll – it is very hilly and they are carrying everything with them including their tent and sleeping bags.

“We are speaking to them most evenings and we went to see them at the weekend to see how they were getting on and to take them a few meals and some clothes because they have had a few wet days.

“We are all trying to back them up as best we can.”

The lads have currently raised just over £300 for their efforts.

Paul said: “They are doing the walk for Cancer Research UK because a family friend of ours was diagnosed with breast cancer.

“They wanted to do something big and make a statement. As a family we have done quite a bit of walking but Offa’s Dyke is one of the longest walks in the country, fortunately though it isn’t too far from home.

“It is a beautiful walk but it really is a challenge.”
