Mayor’s boost for First Responders

sd3502760sw28firstresponde.jpgNewport’s Community First Responders have pocketed over £2,000 for new equipment as the Mayor’s chosen charity.

Town Mayor Councillor Roy Scammell nominated CFR for his first year in office, which came to an end earlier this month.

This week Councillor Scammell presented the charity with a cheque for £2,406 raised through various fundraising events, including a jazz concert and a collection tin at the Guildhall.

He said: “It’s a very worthwhile cause that serves local people.

“I’ve also used them myself. I think local charities should be supported.”

The donation was received by Cliff Medicott, Community Response manager for Shropshire.

He said: “Thank you very much indeed for choosing Community First Responders.

“The money will go on equipment for the community of Newport to provide them with the appropriate care.”

The donation follows a £900 gift earlier in the year through money raised by the Tree of Light appeal over Christmas.

CFRs are members of the public who receive specialist training in life saving techniques, including the use of a defibrillator.

They attend medical emergencies while an ambulance is en route.

Anyone interested in becoming a First Responder should contact Mr Medlicott on 07884050877, or via its headquarters on (01743) 273677.

Councillor Scammell has been re-elected as Mayor and has chosen Newport Cottage Care Centre as his chosen charity for his second term in office.
