Glorious spring sunshine graced the Newport Macmillan Mile last weekend.
Young and old took part in the one mile stroll along the canal basin on Sunday.
And the 17th annual charity event was hailed a success by organisers – despite dwindling numbers.
Around 25 people turned out for the event, less than a third of the 2009 tally and well down on the 150-plus which took part in years gone by.
Chief organiser Alan Smallman said: “We didn’t get the numbers that we have done in the past, which was a bit disappointing, but it was still a good event.
“It was an enjoyable walk. The weather was perfect and the spring colours were very nice. And we still managed to raise a good amount of money, so that was pleasing.”
Around £1,100 has already been handed over to Macmillan.
It is hoped that figure could rise to the £1,500 mark after a number of late pledges were made.
Newly appointed deputy mayor Tony Forrester officially started the walk in his first engagement since taking office.
There was special praise for Newport Tackle Shop, on High Street, which raised £300.
Mr Smallman added: “Most of the staff and visitors to the tackle shop donated and then Joan walked it on their behalf.
“Over the years the anglers have contributed very well and I’d like to thank Joan for their support.”
Words of thanks were extended to Paul Quinn of the Phez and Celia for her clerical work.
Anyone who still wishes to make a donation can do so at Newport Tackle or The Phez, or by contacting Mr Smallman on 01952 810054.
