Town council re-elects mayor

np-sd3491094sp15mayor.jpgNewport Town Council has re-elected its mayor to lead the chamber for a second term.

Councillor Roy Scammell was voted in unanimously at Wednesday night’s full council meeting meaning he will stay at the helm for the duration of the 2010/11 municipal year.

Former deputy mayor councillor Dan Ashley was away on holiday for the meeting and will now step aside after a year in the role.

Former special constable councillor Tony Forrester swung the vote for the number two seat after being nominated for his active role in the community.

Councillor Tim Nelson features in all three of the council’s standing committees .

Joining him on the Community Safety Committee are councillors Peter Scott, Glyn Gratton and Phil Nelson. Heading up the Leisure & Environmental Services Committee are councillors Tim Nelson, Bob Unwin, Peter Scott, Adrian Meredith and Glyn Gratton While decisions in the Planning & Economic Development Committee will be taken by councillors Tim Nelson, Bob Unwin, Sian Walker, Glyn Gratton and Phil Norton.

The Staffing committees will be led by councillors Adam Stanton, Phil Norton and Glyn Gratton. Meanwhile a number of councillors were also voted to serve as part of other community groups.

The Newport Cafe will invite councillor Roy Scammell to its meetings while councillor Tony Forrester will serve on the Police Community Consultative Committee.

Councillor Glyn Gratton will have the council’s casting vote at Newport Regeneration Partnership meetings flanked by councillor Tim Nelson.

The town’s Cosy Hall Management Committee will be supported by councillor Adam Stanton and Newport Cottage Care Centre Management meetings will invite councillor Sian Walker. Councillor Phil Norton remains the Rural Transport User Group member and Burton Borough Sports Hall & Studio Management Group will be joined by councillor Bob Unwin.
