A Newport firefighter has received a top honour from the High Sheriff of Shropshire at a special awards ceremony.
Receiving the High Sheriff Good Citizen Award was Community Fire Safety Technician Officer Charlie Cartwright, of Barnmeadow Road, who is a retained firefighter in both Newport and Shrewsbury.
The award, made by High Sheriff Anna Turner, was for his “substantial contribution” to society and for making a real difference to the safety and well being of others.
Mrs Turner said: “I am absolutely delighted to be making this really important award.
“I don’t know what makes someone go out and work in such dangerous circumstances. I know it is truly humbling to someone like myself. Many congratulations to Charlie Cartwright.”
A first responder for the ambulance service, Charlie also carries out first aid and defibrillator training for the brigade.
He was praised for delivering a first class service often working far and above his contracted hours liaising with county schools, training young people, new recruits and firefighters.
He is also involved in many fundraising events on behalf of first responders and the fire service benevolent fund.
