The winner of an art competition to design the logo for the town’s first ever Crucial Crew event has been revealed.
St Peter’s Primary School pupil Jessica Sohota was awarded with a top of the range Prince tennis racket from Newport Sports for her winning design.
Her motif displaying a stand out yellow flag will now be used to publicise Newport Police’s Crucial Crew event which aims to provide invaluable safety lessons to hundreds of school children.
Newport Police Sergeant Chris Munro said there had been a great response and Constable Tracey Tonks who is leading the event chose the eventual winner.
He said: “Tracey has been working on the project and we had lots of posters sent in from a number of schools.
“Jessica’s winning motif will be appearing on the work books which will be handed to children on the day. We are really looking forward to the event and we are just hoping for some decent weather.”
The Crucial Crew event will run for three days from Tuesday, April 20 to Thursday, April 22 at Harper Adams University playing fields. Involving around 300 year six children it will include safety scenarios for the groups to work through.
The best performing team will be presented with a certificate and a group cup and they will also be given £60 for their school to spend on sports equipment.
The new initiative is based on the annual borough-wide event which Newport youngsters only attend every three years. The localised event has been set up to involve more town children.
Telford & Wrekin Council has donated £4,500 to enable the Newport project to take shape and West Mercia Police has also added £550 to the pot.
Local schools involved include St Peters in Edgmond, Lilleshall Primary, Tibberton Primary, Newport Junior School, St Peter and Pauls, Moorfield Primary and Muxton Primary.
