Newport closing in on safety

rugby1col_colour.jpgNewport Rugby Club aim to extend their winning run to three matches this weekend with a win over high-flying Luton.

And the Fishes will be out for revenge after suffering a 79-13 reverse when the two sides clashed earlier in the season.

Newport, who distanced themselves from the bottom three with a hard fought 21-10 win at Kettering last weekend, have a full squad to choose from for the crunch encounter.

And Directory of Rugby Ray Price hopes the Fishes’ recent good run will be enough to see them maintain their place in the National League Division Three Midlands division for next season.

He said: “We’re targeting five wins to finish the season. We have three of those games at home and we will be doing our best to win them.

“Our home form hasn’t been good this season whereas on the road we have played pretty well all season so we want to put that right.

“We’re still not sure how many sides will be going down from this division. We were told it was three but then I heard it might even be four. I hope it isn’t, in my opinion to relegate four teams, is ridiculous, but until we find out for sure we have to keep getting results.”

Newport currently sit fourth bottom but are within a point of the two sides immediately above them and a victory on Saturday would go a long way to ensuring their survival.

Price added: “There is a little bit of revenge in the players’ minds. We were well beaten down there earlier in the season and we want to put that right.

“We travelled down there with a few injuries and had players playing out of position and a number of players making their first starts so hopefully with a full squad we can get the result.”

Last weekend tries from Michael Woodhouse, Toby Mann and Sam Egerton, along with three James Curgenven conversions, were enough to give Newport the points.

“Conditions were dreadful,” Price said. “It was a real battle and we managed to come out with the win.

“The boys were excellent and played really well. It was a superb performance.”
