University hits back at parking claims

Harper Adams University College has hit back at claims of poor parking by its students - saying it works tirelessly to limit the issue.

The university has fought back against criticism that nothing is done by revealing that a log recording individual student behaviour is constantly updated and immediate action is often taken.

University College Secretary Dr Catherine Baxter said they are always willing to work with local residents to resolve concerns.

She said: “We were alerted to concerns in Hampton Drive, and took immediate action to identify the students concerned and discuss the matter with them.

“At the same time we highlighted the issue of parking appropriately to the entire student population.

“We made it absolutely clear that this is not an acceptable situation and we expect more of our students, particularly those living in the local community - who are acting as ambassadors for the college.

“The complainant was promptly told about the action taken, and informed that this was the first such complaint that we were aware of arising from that part of Newport.

“We keep a log of all correspondence regarding the behaviour of our students – good and bad - and are always willing to work with local residents and students to resolve concerns.

“In relation to Norbroom Drive, we received one complaint, in October 2009, which was addressed promptly, following which no further concerns have been raised.

“The University College would be happy to follow up this matter if further information can be provided.”

Assistant Student Services Manager Rebecca Freer added: “Harper Adams has records of students’ addresses and vehicle number plates, so we can check whether or not incidents have involved our students, and take appropriate action where necessary.

“Colleagues and I strive to ensure that our students are aware of the issues that can arise when they live in the local community.

“For the most part we are extremely proud of our students and their efforts to support the community, for which we regularly receive wonderful feedback.

“However there are from time to time a small number of individuals who do not always consider others before they park their car.

“We are working tirelessly to try to limit these occurrences and ensure that we maintain a good relationship with local residents.”

Residents with concerns can contact the Student Services office on 01952 815396.
