Newport’s parking problems

Dangerous parking is threatening to drive a wedge between students and residents in town.

Norbroom Drive residents claim Harper Adams University College students are making the area dangerous by blocking pavements and obscuring corners.

The parking is so bad that sometimes parents with pushcairs have to go out onto the road to get past.

Richard Pye said students opposite his Norbroom Drive house have ignored repeated requests to park with more consideration.

He said: “At night there can be four cars parked outside the house, right on the junction. Sometimes we can’t even back off our own driveway.I don’t like to moan because, other than the parking, they are no trouble, but it’s a frustration.

I tried ringing the college but they did nothing about it. So I left a message on the windscreen but it was there again the next day.”

And a frustrated Hampton Drive resident - who did not want to be named for fear of repercussions - said the students were endangering lives.

After seeing the photograph of unconventional parking sent in by an eagle-eyed Advertiser reader, she said: “It’s usually worse than that.

“They will park all over the footpath - even if the driveway is free.

“We have children living here and my worry is that they are making it dangerous for them. They are nice, quiet people, but unfortunately they have no parking skills.”

Newport Sergeant Chris Munro said they will look into official complaints.

He said: “As it stands we can’t find record of any recent ‘official’ reports from members of the public in relation to parking problems in the Norbroom area.

“However, if this is an issue that is causing concern I would encourage people to bring it to our attention.

“If people let us know their concerns we will do all we can to address them, just as we have with the parking problems that have been occurring on the High Street and Lower Bar in the town centre.”
