Honours for school band

sd3400682sp06ceremony.jpgBurton Borough’s internationally acclaimed school band are lifting town spirits after a civic ceremony was held to mark their success.

The event was held in St Nicholas Church to toast to the school’s musical achievements on the world stage.

Students returned from the World Music Festival in Holland last year with a silver medal and all three of the school bands took gold at the National Concert Festival earlier in 2009.

The ceremony attracted town residents in their droves and town mayor Roy Scammell said it was a fitting evening to highlight their talent.

He said: “It was a great occasion and the band were put in the spotlight for their fantastic achievements.

“There were past and present pupils at the event and some had come from far and wide to be there.

“There were also a lot of familiar faces in the crowd, with great support from the people of the town.

“Only a few seats were left empty and the band was given a standing ovation.

“We have a lot to be proud of the in Newport, I believe this is one of the only civic ceremonies we have ever had in the town, but the band are certainly one of our greatest assets.

“The music they played complimented the ceremony wonderfully and they deserve all the plaudits they get.”

Musical interludes came from the school’s concert band as well as five pieces from the Big Band.

Past students who once featured in the acclaimed musical outfit also joined in the celebrations with band representatives George Bloor and Pippa Adams taking to the stage to speak on behalf of all band members.

Speeches were also made by councillor Roy Scammell, school headmaster David Hill, chair of governors Paul Broomhead and the rector, Steve Mitchell.

Head of the music department at Burton Borough, Alison Rushton, was delighted to see the hard work from the children being recognised.

She said: “It was a very fitting tribute for the achievements of the band and we are very thankful to the mayor for supporting us.

“It was really his idea and it’s wonderful to see the efforts of the children being recognised.

“All the children thoroughly enjoyed it and they each received a certificate with the bands presented with an overall award.

“There was great support from the public.”
