Adams’ Grammar is celebrating another emerging rugby star as the school’s most exciting talent to date is named in Midlands under 16 squad.
Oliver Claxton, aged 15, will be joining Adams’ other elite rugby figures as he embarks on a season with the competitive Midlands team as he aims for a place in the national U16’s set up.
After making the 26-strong Midland squad at a development weekend at Longton RFC’s ground in Stoke, back in December, he has now taken his first steps on the pitch as a divisional representative.
The squad was picked after a final trial involving 48 players who were selected after impressing in recent inter-county matches.
School coach David Tozer is delighted with Oliver’s progress, saying he is one of the most talented players in the history of the school.
He said: “Oliver is already involved in the Leicester Tigers Academy where he is receiving elite coaching at Welford Road and also during outreach sessions more locally.
“He is probably our most exciting prospect to date, equally happy at scrum half or fly half and is widely tipped to receive his England cap this season.
“Oliver is captain of an unbeaten u16s Adams’ side this year with notably victories against independent heavyweights, Sedburgh School from Cumbria and Millfield School form Somerset.”
After surviving a cut to 22 players in the Midland squad, Oliver attended the first divisional festival of the season at Broadstreet RFC earlier this month.
Last weekend he only saw the last 10 minutes in a divisional match against the South East, however he is expected to start this Sunday in the Midlands battle against the South West .
Adams’ Grammar School has seen several old boys progress to the professional stage - Peter Short, at Bath and Graham Kitchener at Worcester Warriors.
Two other current schoolboys, Stephen Byrne and Callum Perry, are also involved at Leicester Tigers alongside Oliver as juniors.
