Michelin chefs opens sandwich bar

sd3389507sw23sandwich.jpgA Michelin chef has taken a step away from the restaurant business to open a new sandwich bar in Newport.

Gunero, on 33 Upper Bar, officially swung open its doors today but has been trading since Tuesday morning.

The modern bar sells a wide selection of fresh deli, salads and hot pies.

And owner Guner Isik, who has worked in top eateries across Shropshire for over a decade, is hoping that his new business will prove a hit with Newport’s workforce.

He said: “I’m a chef by trait with experience in a Michelin restaurant in Bridgnorth.

“But I wanted to go out on my own and this is the first step for me.

“It’s a nerve-racking but exciting move. Everyone who starts a new business is taking a risk.

“I don’t know how Newport will receive us but I believe in good service and really hope we can offer something different. I’m very hopeful that this can be a success.”

Newport already has a fine selection of delicatessens with Subways, Greggs, Combinations and Wycherleys, among others.

But Mr Isik, originally from Bulgaria, believes that his location on Upper Bar - combined with reasonable prices - will produce good footfall.

He added: “We have builders and plumbers who work just around the corner so I’m sure that will create some business.

“It is true that there are other similar shops in Newport. But I think the town deserved something up this end.

“I have set the prices reasonably low because I believe that if you look after people, they will look after you.

“We’re supporting local businesses by buying local. The meat will come from Dave Matthews butchers, for example.

“I hope that Newport people will support us and keep the money in the town.

“Every complaint that we get will be taken on board to help improve the service.”

As well as the usual array of freshly made sandwiches and baguettes, Gunero will sell hot pies and salad boxes.

Telford-based Mr Isik, aged 35, added that he will be looking for additional staff in due course. Gunero is open from 7am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday and the same time on Bank Holidays.
