Let there be light!

joelthumb.jpgFour-year-old Joel Assouan will be the centre of attention tonight as he flicks the switch on Newport’s Christmas lights.

Joel, from Noah’s Ark Nursery, won the honour after coming up with the winning design in the annual Advertiser-backed Christmas tag competition.

He will be joined on stage by Telford FM’s Paul ‘Shuttsie’ Shuttleworth and Dani Wozencroft.

The torchlight procession leaves Baddeley Court at 6pm, proceeding to St Nicholas’ Church for the main switch-on and illumination of the Tree of Light.

A Christmas Tree Decoration Competition prize-giving has also been scheduled into the night and by 6.30pm the streets will be glistening with festive cheer.

Musical accompaniment will come in the from of a sing-song inside the church with the Salvation Army Band.

And none other than Father Christmas himself will be making an early appearance to entertain the children as town crier, Peter Taunton gives oversees proceedings.

A presentation will also be made to the British Heart Foundation and the Community First Responders from the money raised through this year’s Tree of Light.

The High Street will be closed from 4pm while the popular family occasion takes place. Eagle-eyed residents will have noticed that the town’s lights were given a test run on Monday.
