Fed-up drivers fake A41 passes

Frustrated motorists have been using fake passes to access the A41 during the road closure, causing major problems for residents and businesses.

Hundreds of people have attempted to bypass the lengthy diversion by showing photocopies of passes intended for residents and regular customers of businesses along the route.

Other irate drivers have used abusive language when told they need to take a diversion of around 30 miles - with one person even spitting at a member of the workforce.

As a result, genuine customers of Chetwynd Firs Boarding Kennels & Cattery, which is affected by the roadworks, have been forced to take the lengthy diversion.

Kennels owner, Peter Spicer said: “Tuesday was shambolic for us. I had a call from one of our customers who comes in three or four times a week who said that, although she had a valid pass, she was sent down the diversion.

“I spoke to the workman on the barriers and he said that the pass system had been temporarily revoked as all sorts of people were going through. They’d let one person through and then half a dozen would nip in behind them.

“The annoying thing is that we had a meeting with Stuart Freeman (Telford & Wrekin Business Manager, Network Management & Policy) and two representatives from Tarmac Ltd and they said as long as people are going straight to the kennels they would be able to go through.

“Then, without any communication, they recalled the thing.”

A section of the A41 between Chetwynd Firs, north of Newport and Standford Bridge, near Sambrook, closed both ways for three weeks on Monday.

But during the disruption, businesses and residents were assured they would be able to get access to their properties by showing special passes.

Telford & Wrekin Cabinet Member for environment, Stephen Bentley said that the council were aware of the problem and the contractor would continue to liaise with Mr Spicer.

“In the first few days of the scheme starting we had reports of people misusing passes,” he said.

“Some have been using copies of passes in an attempt to try and pass along the A41 rather than use the diversion routes.

“For that reason the traffic management staff manning the road closures have been having to stop vehicles to confirm where they are trying to get to.

“We have spoken to the owners of the kennels to understand their concerns and the contractor will be liaising with businesses whilst they are carrying out the work to ensure we do what we can to address any concerns.”
