Late winner earns points

A last gasp Nathan Hollaway strike earned Newport Town maximum points in a 2-1 win over Wellington Amateurs Reserves.

The result keeps unbeaten Town within touching distance of Shropshire County First Division leaders Ketley Bank United.

Hollway won the match with the last kick of the game after racing onto player-manager Richard Priest’s clearance.

“Nathan took his chance very well and that could prove to be his most important goal of the season,” said Priest after last Saturday’s clash.

“The game should have been won by half time but we missed so many chances.

“We lost our way a bit in the second half and nearly dropped two points, but we got out of jail in the end.”

Jez Harman hit the bar and Paul Quinn was denied by a fine save in a frustrating opening period for the home side.

But Town did have the lead on the stroke of half time when Carlos Ratcliffe robbed the Amateurs defence and squared the ball for Harman to finish,

The second half was a different story as Wellington grew in confidence.

Town goalkeeper Neil Hendy kept his side in the match with a fine save on 70 minutes before Ratcliffe surged through but failed to find the target.

Amateurs looked to have stolen a point eight minutes from time when they took advantage of some slack marking from a corner to make it 1-1, but Hollaway was to have the final word.

New signing Liam Bold will make his debut tomorrow as Town journey to Wrockwardine Wood 2004.

Callum Muir is still two weeks from fitness, though, and Martin Quinn is also away.
