Junior school scoops top honour

Newport Junior SchoolNewport Junior School has scooped a prestigious award for their international ethos.

Headteacher Steve Ashton was presented with the International School Award by the BBC’s George Alagiah on behalf of the school last week.

Only 2,000 primary schools in the whole of the country received the award - and only five others from Telford & Wrekin joined the junior school in scooping the honour.

The ISA recognises schools who display an international ethos embedded throughout the establishment and show an involvement in the wider community.

Newport Junior School’s Nicola Fowles said: “We had to show the international awareness of our staff and children.

“We started with east and west and formed links with schools in Barry Island and Dublin.

“We’ve also been working with schools in Cyprus, Germany, Portugal and Greece - and that’s included some of the staff doing exchanges.

“The children have really enjoyed learning about other countries and it’s something we’ll be looking to develop further with new projects.”

As well as the International School flag, pictured, Newport Junior School received a crystal award and certificate, which were paraded at an assembly last week.

St Peter & St Paul RC Primary School on Coppice Drive also received the accreditation.
