Shake-up planned despite point

Newport Town manager Richard Priest has vowed to shake-up his starting line-up tomorrow - despite claiming a very respectable point at league leaders Ketley Bank United.

A late equaliser by Steve Handley maintained Town’s unbeaten start to the campaign in a 1-1 draw last weekend.

But Priest was quick to vent his disappointment with his team’s display - and promised changes for the visit of Wellington Amateurs Reserves.

He said: “I was more disappointed with the performance than the result.

“A draw here isn’t a disaster, but the performance just wasn’t good enough.

“This was the biggest game of the season to date yet but a lot of the lads didn’t turn up.

“Maybe it’s time I freshen the side up and make some changes to keep everyone on their toes.”

The draw leaves Town six points behind Shropshire County first division leaders Ketley but the Shuker Field men have two games in hand.

Both sides went into the match boasting 100 per cent records and the opening 20 minutes was a cagey affair.

Town had the first opening, but top scorer Carlos Ratcliffe could not finish.

Goalkeeper Neil Hendy produced a fine save after 28 minutes to deny the home side.

And two minutes later Ketley were awarded a penalty after a trip by Wayne Gaskell.

Karl Ainsworth dusted himself off to take the kick but saw his effort come crashing back off the bar and scrambled clear by the Newport defence.

Christian Slade and Nathan Hollaway both went close before the break, but the half ended goalless.

It took Ketley just five minutes to break the deadlock after the re-start, though, following a rare blunder by Hendy.

Town responded by bringing on Paul Quinn - and the midfielder nearly got his name on the scoresheet on the hour but his 25 yard effort whistled past the post.

Priest played his last card by bringing on Martin Quinn.

And his first touch produced the equaliser when his long ball was met by the towering head of Handley.

Town are still without long-term absentees Chris Lytham and Calum Muir for tomorrow’s clash against second-from-bottom Wellington Amateurs. Kick off is at 2.30pm.
