Controversial roadworks WILL halt motorists

Controversial roadworks on the A41 into Newport WILL be carried out during the day, the Advertiser can reveal.

Motorists will be faced with a stark choice between crowding onto minor roads or taking a 30-mile diversion route.

The decision has been taken to ‘minimise disruption’ despite huge public outcry earlier this month after the work was announced - which forced an 11th hour u-turn.

The earliest start date for the day and night resurfacing work on a two-mile stretch of the road is Wednesday November 11 - but that could be put back once more if Sambrook residents have major objections to the new proposals.

The work will mean that the road will be closed between Chetwynd Firs and just north of Stanford Bridge, near Sambrook for nine days.

Residents and businesses were furious that they had not been fully consulted about the closure and its implications.

The original plans would have seen the stretch closed during the day time for nearly two weeks.

“It was an embarrassing moment for the authorities as it became clear that residents hadn’t been properly informed,” said Edgmond Councillor Stephen Burrell.

“It was a major thing halting work three days before it was due to begin and really showed the deep concerns about the work.

“Now we are keen to make sure that we keep the public well informed this time.

“Working throughout the night and leaving the road open throughout the day was considered - but that would have meant that the work would have lasted for 55 days and that would have been no good to anyone.

“We did a straw poll at the last public meeting and residents did support 24 hour work.”

Letters have been hand-delivered to homes in the parish and Councillor Stephen Bentley has been calling door-to-door to inform residents of the latest plans.

A public meeting has been called on November 19 at Sambrook Village Hall to discuss road safety on the stretch.
