New favours for old boy Simpson!

Newport Rugby Club come up against former player Jamie Simpson tomorrow - as local rivals Luctonians visit Forton Road.

Scrum-half Simpson joined Lucs in the summer after 20 years with the Fishes, having come up through the ranks from under-eight level.

The tough-tackling, kicking expert established himself as a fan’s favourite with Newport but made the switch to Mortimer Park to be closer to his workplace.

“We didn’t want to lose Jamie because he is an excellent player,” said Fishes director of rugby Ray Price.

“It’ll be great to see him again and we’ll have a good bit of banter - but we won’t be giving him any favours on the pitch.”

Newport welcome their old foe back to Shropshire in good spirits - having recorded back-to-back victories with a 14-9 victory over Longton on Saturday following a win over Kettering the previous week.

That elevated Ian Bletcher’s side into eighth position in National division three Midlands - but it came at a price.

Inside centre Neil Weston suffered a badly broken nose and will be out for at least three weeks.

New signing Matt Ings is making good progress with his damaged sternum but will need at least another week of rest.

Newport will, however, be pleased to welcome Adam Greeves and Toby Mann back into the team, who were both unavailable last Saturday.

Price added: “I don’t suppose we’re the only club with injuries, so we’re just going to have to get on with it.

“It’s always a good derby atmosphere against Lucs.

“They’ve had a poor start to the season but won their last game - so we’ll have to nip that recovery in the bud and get going ourselves.

“We were very, very pleased with the lads against Longton.

“They really put in a performance and it was an exceptionally good win.”

New addition Omar Suleiman scored his first try for the club as Newport recorded their first away win of the campaign against the Staffordshire outfit.

A fierce wind and driving rain made the first half difficult for both teams, and Newport were behind after just two minutes when the home side converted a penalty.

The visitors were soon on level terms, though, Tomasi Tanumi knocking through the posts after a near-identical offside offence.

A 28-metre kick put Longton back in the ascendency in very tricky playing conditions.

Newport huffed and puffed but could not find a way through, allowing Longton to pull out a 9-3 lead at the half time break with a third successful penalty.

The Fishes had the wind advantage after the break and immediately made the most of it by clawing three points back, Tanumi on target once more.

Newport were then penalised on the ground but comments from the home player resulted in the penalty being reversed.

And the visitors took full advantage of their break, Suleiman storming through a ragged home defence after a series of forward drives to make it 11-9.

Longton probed for an opening but the Newport’s back line stood firm and a 30-metre kick by Tanumi with three minutes remaining sealed the win.

The hosts grew frustrated and played out the final two minutes with 14 men after Paul Green received his marching orders for punching Sam Lewis.
