Charity event raises cash

Legion fun dayA Fun Day at the British Legion in Newport has been hailed a success after raising more than £2,000 for The Servern Hospice.

The 11-hour bonanza was organised in memory of Mick Smith and Cliff Vernon, who were both cared for at the centre in their final days.

“It was just a brilliant day,” said Sue Smith, wife of the late Mick. “We were quite nervous about whether people would turn up, but the turn out was terrific.

“The evening was heaving - we had to bring in more tables it was so busy.

“There is still more money to come in but at the moment we are at the £2,200 mark and we are hoping to reach £2,500.

“The Severn Hospice did so much positive work for me and my family that we just wanted to give something back.

“People say that little towns like Newport don’t do much - but the community really rallied around for us and I am really appreciative.”

The event took place last Saturday with 16 stalls set up in the Legion from 1pm - 5pm. The fun included a hog roast, tombola, raffle and bouncy castle with live music in the evening.

Mrs Smith added: “It was great to raise much needed money but also to remember Mick and Cliff, who were both wonderful husbands, fathers and brothers.

“They will be greatly missed but never forgotten.”
