Art exhibition to mark ZigZags milestone

ZigZagsZigzags on St Mary Street is celebrating it’s first anniversary in the town this week.

To mark the occasion the textile store is holding an exhibition running until September 12, showcasing work completed in their workshops.

The stage is also being set for demonstrations of various forms of textile art on Saturday.

Co-owner Ann Armes said the shop is still proving to be a hidden gem for many passers-by.

She said: “We still have people coming in to the shop who live in Newport but didn’t know we were here.

“This birthday party will be a perfect occasion to come and see us and what we sell and do.

“The size of the shop is deceiving from the outside.”

Zigzags has seen a growing demand for their workshops over the last year which cater for all levels, with some being taught by international textile artists and tutors.

Starting in January, they will be offering City and Guilds in Embroidery.

Ann added: “With one in three businesses closing in the first year reaching this landmark is not an easy task especially with the current economic climate.

“Newport does appear to be bucking this trend with its small independent shops and businesses.

“Newport’s art scene in particular is continuing to grow with the new art shop on Lower Bar and Maggie (Hollinshead) at the Picture Shop and Gallery who has just hung up a new exhibition.

“We want to thank everyone for their support and help over the the past 12 months.”
