Pub’s noise problem threatens open mic event

The Lion in Edgmond has been served with a warning notice for noise pollution and could face a fine of up to £20,000.

The abatement notice has been fixed by Telford and Wrekin Council because of the levels of noise coming from the pub.

And now the popular haunt, which famously hosts an open mic nights on Thursday evenings, could face a colossal fine if the noise persists.

Complaints have been made by neighbouring residents since the junior open mic event started on Sunday evenings.

And with noise detectors now placed opposite the pub licencee Ben Lawrence had no choice but to cancel the event.

He said: “It’s a real shame to cancel the junior night but we are also having to be stringent with the Thursday open mic night as well.

“The noise levels will be checked three times in a six month period and if noise exceeds the permitted level then we could be taken to court.

“We have had the function room sound proofed and the council were happy with that but the complaints have gone through the roof since the junior night started.

“It seems to be more about children playing in the garden. But we have just been trying to put something back into the community and now we face a £20,000 fine.”

Newport resident John Heath has been involved with the open mic sessions for the past four years.

He said: “We do not want to upset anyone. The Lion is a superb venue for live music, and I do not believe that we are making so much noise that we deserve an abatement notice.

“Efforts have been made since then to consult people living nearby to address their concerns over noise. And no-one seems to be too disturbed.

“Would it not be feasible for the council, the complainant and the Lion to get together to sort out the problem and let us all continue to enjoy the beautiful facility that is The Lion in Edgmond?”

Environmental health manager Ian Mercer, said: “We can confirm that an abatement notice was served requiring the landlord to comply with the law and ensure the noise originating from the property remains within acceptable levels.

“This is a statutory notice with legal force and we therefore cannot discuss the detail of this case.

“However, we are in contact with the landlord and are continuing to work with him about the issue to help him comply with the law.”
