Councillors mugged on holiday trips

Two Newport Town Councillors were mugged in separate attacks while on holiday last week.

The town’s deputy mayor, Councillor Dan Ashley, was attacked while walking on a beach in Scarborough.

He told the Advertiser that he was enjoying a walk along the beach, only to feel a sudden hit on the back of the neck.

He was knocked to the ground before his wallet, and £80 cash, was stolen.

The second attack happened last week when Councillor Phil Norton was on holiday with his family in Majorca.Councillor Norton was out shopping with his 15-year-old daughter when three men approached him.

He said: “This guy wanted to sell a watch to me, as they do when you are on holiday, but I didn’t want it and he started to get nasty.

“Then two other guys came over and it was down an alleyway and I had my daughter with me.

“I just handed them the money, I think it was about €50, because I didn’t know what they were going to do. It was really frightening.”
