Newport residents were enjoying the taste of success this week as the results for Newport In Bloom were revealed.
Competition judges visited resident’s gardens and marked them on appearance, variety of plants and tidiness.
Judges looked at gardens in six categories including allotments, commercial displays, residential, schools, groups dwellings such as cul-de-sacs and maintained gardens, such as nursing homes.
Scooping the best overall garden award was Farm Grove resident, John Pratt.
And on his first year entering the competition, Oak Avenue resident Paddy McCartney scooped the best kitchen garden for his display of runner beans, peas, onions and strawberries, to name a few.
Newport In Bloom organiser, Wendy Goodchild, said the judges were highly impressed with this year’s entries.
She said: “Judges were impressed with all three sections of the residential competition. They reported a very wide variety of excellent planting over small to larger gardens.
“The good summer weather has produced some outstanding tubs, containers and baskets and the awards given reflect this.
“Passion and gardening knowledge were apparent with some gardens having very unusual plants and planting schemes.
“There was some very successful planting of vegetables and fruit and the judges saw a general increase in container growing of vegetables with families clearly enjoying growing and eating the produce.
“Using recycled objects were apparent in some gardens and it was pleasing to see some younger gardeners entering the competition.”
