New bar opens up in town!

Harpers Bar NewportNewport has a new bar on St Mary Street which swung open its doors on Saturday.

After months of renovation and re-fitting, bar owners Denise Beaumont and Chris Hardie opened their first business venture together.

The duo, from Church Aston and Chetwynd respectively, opened Harpers Bar at number 26 St Mary Street with punters queuing up for their tea and cake.

During the day the bar will be a cafe serving hot and cold drinks with a range of sandwiches, bagels, cakes and other homemade delights.

For evening entertainment, Harpers boasts two plasma screens for sport with a range of bottled beer on offer, along with spirits.

Opening the modern bar this week, Mr Hardie said it is already proving a hit with locals.

He said: “We opened at 8pm on Saturday and we had a lot of people in, it was five deep at one point.

“But on our first week of trading we are getting people coming in asking us if it is just for the students so we want to let people know it’s for the locals too.

“Although we called it Harpers, we want people to come in for coffee and snacks too.

“Then at night time it will turn into a sports bar and we will have promotions on with different kinds of sport.

The bar will be open Monday to Saturday, from 8.30am - 11.30pm.
