A campaign to encourage people to think green by buying an environmentally-friendly bag was launched in Newport this week.
Shoppers in the town now have the chance to buy their own Newport Bag for Life.
They are available from the Guildhall and other retailers in the town at a cost of £2.
Adam Stanton, Newport town councillor, came up with the concept of the plastic-free bag a year ago.
The new bag is 100 per cent ethical and made of recycled cotton and made from cut-offs.
It is being sponsored by Newport Town Council, Newport Regeneration Partnership and Newport Lions.
The bags have taken about a year to produce from the design to completion stage.
Councillor Stanton said: “We have got 500 bags and are selling them for £2. The purpose is to raise the awareness of the environmental issues really, to promote the cause of non-plastic bags.
“Although they are made from tax-free donations of local organisations, the profit made through them is going to be going straight back into the campaign for a more environmentally friendly Newport.”
