BLOGS: Change the record

Alex James BlogAlex James frantically searches for the mute button on his car stereo.

Am I getting old?

I would certainly hope not given that I’m only 22 but while driving home this weekend I caught the end of this week’s top 40 hit singles.

And after taking Michael Jackson out I’d hardly heard of any of the artists featured!

Cascada, Chicane and Pitbull are names I’m not familiar with. Admittedly there were a couple I recognised – Black Eyed Peas for one – but aside from them I really was struggling.

If Chipmunk walked past me in Asda I wouldn’t bat an eyelid – unless he was dressed in the outfit his name suggests – then I’d afford him a few moments of my time.

I wouldn’t have minded too much if any of the stuff was worth listening to but most of it was annoying dross.

I swear at one point the lyrics in one track were harping on about chickens!

Chickens! Who writes a song about chickens – apart from Old Macdonald?

Of course it being a rap song it could be a euphemism for almost everything and, as I’m not on the cutting edge of rap, I apologise if it is in fact something post-watershed!

Having gone from 11 to one there were two songs I would happily listen to again – and one of those was first released in 1988.

Although having said that I haven’t brought a CD (do people still buy CDs?) for about a year and a half so I guess I am slightly out of touch with the music scene.

So far, mainly through the absence of an IPod I have not ventured into downloading tunes yet and I’m now seriously worried about turning into an old man before my time, longing for ‘the good old days’ when you could wonder into a shop, pick up an album by an artist with a normal name and normal songs and happily stick it on the CD player.

Worryingly I think I’m turning into my dad.
