Warning over falling school trees

A Newport resident has slammed Castle House School as an “absolute disgrace” after two of their trees fell into the canal, raising questions over the school’s safety policy.

Two of the school’s trees have tumbled onto the towapth in the last two weeks and a Chetwynd Grove resident, whose home backs onto the canal, said a third tree looks set to topple within the next few days.

Joe Harriman said if the trees had fallen during the day it could have been fatal.

He said: “Over the last few weeks Castle House School grounds have lost two very large trees, both coming down overnight, blocking the towpath and reaching into the canal.

“The last one came down in the early hours between Saturday and Sunday and if anyone was in the wrong place at the wrong time, it would have been fatal.

Castle House School headteacher Richard Walden said: “The school is equally concerned about what happened and we are seeking urgent professional advice.

“There was a tree which fell and we think that weakened the second one. The school grounds are in a conservation area and we require planning permission for any work, so these things take time.”
