Swine flu outbreak in town

Wellington Road SurgerySwine flu has hit Newport with nearly 40 suspected cases in the town, but health chiefs have said there is no need to panic.

Wellington Road and Linden Hall Surgery have been inundated with calls and have both prescribed the Tamiflu vaccine.

And staff at the town surgeries are now holding daily meetings as they try to tackle the rising pandemic.

Wellington Road GP Nick Tindall said they had received a large volume of calls.

He said: “There have been a significant number of calls and we have had to make more time for our dedicated phone line. We have had between 10 and 20 suspected cases of swine flu.

“We are now in the treatment phase and because we are not testing this has been based on symptoms.

“Indications are that it is going to get worse.“This may be the calm before the storm but it is important we have a system in place and that we are positive we can deal with it.”

Anyone with flu-like symptoms is advised to stay at home and ring NHS Direct on 0845 135000.
