A 19-year-old Newport student who drove his car with a fellow student sitting on the bonnet has been ordered to pay £1,000.
Robert Thompson, of Wrekin Avenue, appeared in Shrewsbury Crown Court on Monday. He admitted causing danger to road users by obstruction to the road on October 23 last year.
The Crown Prosecution Service offered no evidence for a charge of dangerous driving on the same date and Judge Robin Onions ordered a verdict of not guilty to be recorded.
Thompson, who drove his Vauxhall Astra on the B5062 near the Harper Adams Agricultural College with his friend on the bonnet, was ordered to pay £500 court costs and a £500 fine for his actions.
Andrew Berkeley, prosecuting, said: “At about 2.45pm on October 23 a Mr William Broadhurst saw the Astra being driven along the B5062 near Harper Adams College, sat on the bonnet of that car was a fellow student of the defendents.
“It was seen to drive into the car park and went round the car park twice. The incident was seen on CCTV.”
Mr Michael Grey, for Thompson, said he accepts what he did was wrong and could have resulted in injury.
Judge Robin Onions said Thompson had joined a long list of stupid students but was caught.
He added: “You took a risk here, you took a risk with your future and a risk to the future of the young man who was stupid enough to sit on the bonnet of your car. It is a remarkably stupid thing to do.”
