Election candidates

Peter ScottElection fever hit Newport this week when two candidates threw their hats into the ring for a seat on Newport Town Council.

Standing for election is Independent candidate and married father of two, Peter Scott, from Walnut Close.

Peter, aged 55, was born in the town and is a financial advisor for HSBC on High Street. A member of Nova Theatre Club for more than 40 years and a founder member of the Pickled Walnut Theatre Company, Peter added he has extensive knowledge of the town.

“In the past I have often been critical of the council and the way they handled some of the issues that have affected the town. The bus build outs, the millennium fountain excreta, and feel that whilst it is easy to have a go from the outside, I can only get a better understanding of the problems facing the council by putting myself forward to join the ranks.

“I am standing as an independent because I believe that party politics has no place on a town council.

“I can offer a common sense approach and will question any proposals I think will not benefit the town and Newport East in particular,” he said.

Also standing at the July 30 election is Matthew Dove, 30, from Chetwynd End.

The father of one is a Conservative candidate who owns a telecoms business and has a degree in astrophysics.

“There is going to be a lot of investment coming into Newport, with the swimming pool and other facilities so I would like to oversee that.

“I have a son in Newport Infants and I thought it would be a good time to get involved and watch how it all goes forward.

“I’m active about the town and I enjoy watching the rugby and football. I also play the guitar and I have been known to sing, but not for a long time.”
