A Newport mother who’s son is in the RAF has called on Newport Town Council to fly a flag for the armed forces.
Irene Lawrence, who also has an ex-army husband, said she was furious the Guildhall did not currently fly a flag.
And she felt one should especially be flown this week as it is Armed Forces Day tomorrow.
This is the first year it has been run and was set up as an opportunity for the country to show their support for the armed forces community.
Events are being held around the country all week, culminating in a special service tomorrow.
Speaking this week, Mrs Lawrence said she called the town council and was told they knew nothing about the day.
She said:“We feel very very strongly that the town council have missed this and I was quite shocked they didn’t know what I was on about.
“They are quick enough to put up a flag for Europe. They could at least fly it for Saturday, that would be a start.
“It represents all people, past and present.”
Town clerk, Lee Jakeman, said the deadline for buying the special flags had passed on June 16, but added the council are now advertising the event in the Guildhall window.
Mr Jakeman added he would put the flag’s purchase to members for consideration.
Meanhiwle, the town council reminded Newport veterans who would like to receive a service medal.
Anyone retired from the forces is entitled to a medal, and receivers will be asked to provide their number and rank.
