Skatepark launch beats the weather

The weather failed to dampen the spirits of some die-hard skaters last weekend as rain poured down on Newport skatepark’s launch day.

After six years in the making, it was the rain which had the last laugh on Saturday, but in true fashion, the teenagers just got on with enjoying themselves.

Sk8 & Ride Secretary, Marc Simpson said: “The professionals who were drafted in for the day sadly were unable to perform in the very wet conditions.

“Never the less, this did not dampen the enthusiasm of the revellers.”

Entertainment included a rodeo, as well as a popular five-a-side competition which saw The Broomfield Boys crowned the winners.

Newport Sk8 & Ride Chairman, Diana Haselock said: “We were so disappointed with the weather, the day could have been so much better.

“But we have decided we are not going to let the Great British weather get the better of us, and so, we shall be doing it all over again later in the year, when we have secured the required funding to hold another free event.”

This week’s Super Saturday event sees the return of Team Extreme for A BMX Freestyle taster day at the skatepark from 1pm - 4pm.
