Newport Town Council has dished out more than £3,000 in grants with the largest amount topping £1,500.
At a full council meeting on Wednesday night, members had seven requests from group around the town for cash.
Taking the largest amount, of £1,500, was the League of Friends in Newport, who fundraise to keep the town’s X-Ray facility open.
The league wrote to the council and said they were £3,900 short of a project to buy a demountable building for fundraising, which is going to set them back £31,000.
Councillor Adam Stanton suggested a donation of £2,000 but Councillor Eric Carter said such a large amount could leave them short for the rest of the year.
Councillor Carter said the facility is well used by residents, particularly the elderly who do not have to travel outside of town for medical help, but added he was concerned about spending £2,000 so soon into the new financial year.
He said: “I am concerned that the rest of the year we would be short because we have another 11 months to go.”
Members agreed to settle on £1,500 for the group.
The Saturday Club, who help to set up other groups in the area, were given £400.
Severn Hospice were given £300 and Deputy Town Mayor Councillor Daniel Ashley said the charity provide great care.
He said: “They do a fantastic job and they looked after my father very well and they look after a lot of people in Newport so giving them the money will be a real benefit to the town.
“I would like to have seen them ask for more, but we should certainly give them £300 they asked for.”
Newport Carnival were allocated £160 for a new bannert.
Other amounts agreed by councillors were £200 for Church Aston Scout Group; £300 for Wrekin Division Young Leaders and £200 for Oakengates Youth Summer School.
