A local philanthropist has left a cheque for £50,000 in his will to cover the cost of an extensive renovation to a village church.
Jeremy Beasley, a former resident of Sheriffhales died in August last year and one of his last wishes was to provide funding to his local St Mary Church get a revamp.
A successful businessman and investor in the area, his wife Pat Beasley, who still lives in the village, presented the cheque to the church at its annual general meeting at the end of April.
The refurbishment will include major work to the vestry which will be fitted with a new kitchenette, toilets and a new community room.
The Parochial Church Treasurer Peter Ward said that it was a staggering amount of money to receive and they have already had architects out to start the plans.
He said: “These days, it’s so kind and public spirited of the family to give the church the money. When we build the community room, which would not have been possible without this donation, we are going to call it The Beasley Room.
“We are very thankful to Mr Beasley, we could not have done it without his generosity.”
A letter regarding funding for the renovation work was sent into Sheriffhales Parish Council by the Parochial Church Council (PCC) in March asking for written support in it’s bid to achieve funding.
The parish council is now looking at funding a plaque dedicated to Mr Beasley.
Parish councillor Gordon Tonkinson said he was delighted to have secured the funding.
He said: “It is astounding to receive this sort of funding. Jeremy Beasley was admired and respected and he epitomised all that is good about the village.
“His family have been marvellous for the parish and they are a very active part of village and church life.
“And as the parish council we will look to fund a plaque in dedication.”
Reverand Chris Thorpe, who has been at the parish church since last autumn expressed his thanks for the donation.
He said: “We are very very grateful for the generosity of this gift, I’m sure we we could not have done this without it.
“This will enable us to transform the church in Sherrifhales to place it a place where people of all ages can be welcomed.
“We intend to use the donation to create a place of welcome and hospitality for everyone in the community.”
