Newport’s Mr Macmillan has given a special vote of thanks to Newport folk this week after a recent fundraising walk clocked up more than £4,000 for the charity.
Alan Smallman banked a whopping £4,126, for Macmillan Cancer Support this week after cashing up the money raised at the mile walk held last month.
The event which takes a trail along the town’s canal attracted many families and fellow fundraisers.
Alan, who always aims to bank £5,000 each year for the charity said he was very happy with the amount raised and hopes to get more people along next year.
“I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who joined in on the day and donated to the event. We raised over £4,000 which I think is a very good total despite not getting the numbers I expected,” said Alan.
“I hope to see double the amount of people at next year’s event and I would like to express my thanks to the people of Newport who helped this year.
“In particular Doreen Brittin who helped with getting forms around the church, history society and other clubs, Joan Ashcroft from Newport Tackle and Paul Quinn from the Pheasant Pub.
“Among many other clubs and associations who helped me, these three people gave up much of their time to help with the process.”
Having completed the Macmillan Mile, Alan is now planning for his next fundraising event in his bid to arrange at least one per month throughout the year.
He said: “I am now organising the Fishing Pairs in Newport for the first Saturday in July. It will be held along the Newport Canal and it usually raises quite a lot of money.
“The clubs give the use of the water free of charge and the charity get a percentage of the pool money and peg fees.”
