After six years and nearly £200,000, Newport Sk8 & Ride is holding a Launch Day which will include a visit by the world’s number one flatland BMX champion.
The park has been open for the past two months with many youngsters enjoying the Super Saturday sessions which have been taking place.
The park was an idea first put forward in 2003 by young people in the town who wanted an all-in-one facility.
What they got in return was the county’s largest skate facility with one of the most impressive ramps in the country, the W ramp.
The Sk8 & Ride committee, made up of volunteers, put together a proposal for lottery funding and after months of planning and hard work, they secured the cash to build the Norbroom Park facility.
From the start the committee insisted on young people from the town taking a lead role in what the final park would look like.
As a result, since opening nearly eight weeks ago, there has been no vandalism at the site and youngsters have been seen collecting up rubbish in a bid to keep it clean.
So in recognition of everyone’s work, there will be a launch party next Saturday, June 6.
The family event is set to see around 2,000 revellers at Norbroom Park, in what is being billed as a carnival atmosphere.
There will be free entertainment throughout the day from world class stars including a mountain bike stunt show, unicycle and cycle circus show, and the world number one flatland BMX champion, Sam Foakes.
Sk8 & Ride Committee Secretary Marc Simpson said the day is set to be one to remember, with a range of entertainment designed to appeal to everyone from youngsters to adults.
He said: “I am absolutely delighted that our multi-use skate park project is now fully completed, and paid for.
“We’re hoping it’s going to be a mini carnival atmosphere - a nice warm up to the carnival itself the following week.
“The event will showcase the work that Newport SK8 & Ride has done and will focus on the activities on offer at the new facility. There is something for all the family.”
There will also be speeches on the day, where revellers can listen to how the skate park came from just an idea and dream for many young people, to an actual reality.
The day will kick off at 11am and run until 4pm, with speeches expected to be heard around 12noon.
